What can physiotherapy do to help during the recovery from breast cancer?
At Bellefleur Physiotherapy, our breast cancer rehabilitation sessions include a thorough 75-minute assessment in a private, comfortable, and quiet room. We will first take a detailed history regarding the area of concern, details from your unique cancer journey, and then proceed to a physical assessment to determine a treatment plan individualized for your specific needs.
Breast cancer rehabilitation assessments include an external approach to assess and treat neck and arm impairments, posture and soft tissue imbalances, scar management, breast implant mobilization when warranted, monitoring and measuring for lymphedema, and plenty of education. In the case of lymphedema or Axillary Web Syndrome, other approaches will be taken to manage and treat these. Specifically-tailored exercises are prescribed to manage pain after surgery as well as to regain lost range of motion from surgical scars along the chest wall. During the assessment session, clients can expect to remove shirts and undergarments so the physiotherapist can better assess skin integrity and scarring. Clients are empowered to learn new strategies for posture and movement to regain range of motion and strength as well as overall management regarding pain and scarring.
No matter where you find yourself on your cancer journey, our team is ready to help along the way. If heading into cancer treatments, meeting with our physiotherapist can help with baseline measurements as well as ensure you feel more confident and prepared heading into the procedures you are undertaking. If midway in your therapies, we want to ensure the best healing environment and post-surgical management. If the cancer treatments are over, we would love to have you in our clinic to then assess and optimize function to get you back to your normal.
