Chronic Pain

Gentle Movement for Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is pain that is ongoing and usually lasts longer than six months. This type of pain can continue even after the injury or illness that caused it has healed or gone away. Pain signals remain active in the nervous system for weeks, months or years. Conditions can include headaches, arthritis, cancer, nerve pain, back pain, and fibromyalgia.

When chronic pain causes the lack of physical movement, a host of other health problems may arise making the recovery process more difficult and lengthy. When people experience chronic pain, there is a natural tendency to be overprotective and avoid movement.  When muscles are inactive, they quickly deteriorate and joints become stiff, which can cause increased pain and reduced bodily function.

We have developed a program that will help to introduce movement back into your life and help you build confidence in your ability to move. Exercise helps keep your joints moving well, keeps your muscles strong, and improves mental health.

The program may be covered by private health insurance under certain conditions.

GLA:D®

The GLA:D® program is an education and exercise program that has helped thousands of people with hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA) manage their symptoms of pain and loss of function.

The program reflects the latest OA research and has been developed based on feedback from people with OA, as well as healthcare professionals who provide care to individuals with mild to severe symptoms. GLA:D® therefore provides an evidence-based approach that works in the real world.

To determine if you will benefit from the GLA:D® program you will undergo an assessment by a specially trained physiotherapist for this program, which will include a physical assessment as well as some functional tests.

Happy Hip and Knee

Painful hip and knee arthritis can keep you from being as active as you want and need to be. Are you avoiding walking or going up and down the stairs because of the pain? Avoiding activities can actually shorten and weaken the ligaments, tendons, and surrounding muscles.

The Happy Hip and Knee Program brings movement back that helps to pump fluid in and out of the joint space. Our goal is to reduce your pain and swelling, and increase your mobility, strength, balance, and endurance.
